Company History ...
In May1979 Don and Alice Klamer purchased 3000 blueberry cuttings from Hartmann's Plant Company in Michigan with the intention of starting a pick your own blueberry farm. Since the cost of land was so exorbitant, Don started growing rhododendrons and azaleas on a small scale in order to eventually buy a farm. What began as Blue Sky Acres with the dream for a blueberry farm became a wholesale nursery where Don realized his goal of being a grower and working with plants.
Initially land was rented in Winona and then Don and Alice bought a run down fruit farm with 21 acres in Beamsville in1985. In the beginning ericaceous plants were the primary focus. In the early 90's the nursery line was expanded to include daylilies, hostas and ornamental grasses. At Blue Sky Nursery one of the goals has been to strive to grow species and cultivars that are not so commonly propagated and grown in Southern Ontario.
In May 2000 Don passed away of cancer at the age of 51, but his vision continues to be carried on by a highly qualified, dedicated and knowledgeable staff.
In April 2004 a new office and residence for migrant workers was built to give us the space and resources needed to expand our service to our customers. We celebrated our 25th anniversary and printed our first full colour catalogue in 2005. Our competent staff, product lines and customer services have expanded our company’s profile in the industry.
We look forward to many more years of growing our relationships.
